Why do cliffs collapse?
  • There are several reasons why cliffs collapse
  • Marine processes? cliff bases eroded by hydraulic
    action and abrasion steeper cliff
  • Weathering weakens rocks
  • Heavy rain saturates permeable rock at the top.
May also erode cliff faces as it goes down
  • Water flows through permeable rock adding to the
    weight of the cliff
  • Human actions? buildings add to the weight which
can push down onto a weak cliff.

5
Christchurch Bay
  • Christchurch Bay is located on the UKs South
Coast. It has a severe erosion problem. It needs
management to stop the cliffs eroding over 2
    meters a year
  • Barton-on-Sea is part of Christchurch Bay. Mass
movement here is the major problem
  • Christchurch Bay is prone to erosion as it has a
3000 mile fetch across the Atlantic Ocean.

6
Impacts on Christchurch Bay
  • Homeowners could loose their homes to the sea.
House value will decrease dramatically and
    insurance may not be given
  • Dangerous conditions in terms of falling rocks
    and unpredictable slumping
  • Sometimes roads and infrastructure are destroyed
  • Area becomes unattractive and tourism may
    decrease leading to economic impacts
  • SOLUTION??? Sea defences- but they are expensive
and some people dont think its worth it
