Title: The Five Themes of Geography
1The Five Themes of Geography
- By Miss K. Rice
- Revised by Mr. K. Buege
2The 5 Themes of Geography
- Location
- Movement
- Region
- Place
- Human/ Environment Interaction (HEI)
- 5 Themes of Geography video
3Theme 1 Location
4Location
- There are two types of LOCATION!!
- Absolute (its exact location on the Earth)
- Relative (its location in relation to other
places)
5Absolute Location
- Absolute Location is found by using
- Two specific line types
- Latitude
- Longitude
6Absolute Location
- Latitude Lines
- AKA (Parallels)
- Latitude lines are drawn from
- East to West
- Latitude lines measure
- North to South
7Absolute Location
- The Major Line of LATITUDE is the
- Equator
- It splits the Earth into
- the Northern and
- Southern Hemispheres
8Define Hemisphere
- Half of a globe
- (in our case the Earth)
9Absolute Location
- Other important lines of LATITUDE
- 22 1/3 North Tropic of Cancer
- 22 1/3 South Tropic of Capricorn
- They are important because
- They get the most direct
- sunlight making these areas
- the hottest places on Earth
10Absolute Location
- Other important lines
- 66 1/2 North Arctic Circle
- 66 1/2 South Antarctic Circle
- They are important because
- These areas get the least amount
- of sunlight. Part of the year
- there is no sunlight and the
- other part of the year there
- is no darkness.
11Absolute Location
- Longitude Lines
- AKA (Meridians)
- Latitude lines are drawn from
- North to South
- Latitude lines measure
- East to West
12Absolute Location
- The Major Line of LONGITUDE is the
- Prime Meridian
- It splits the Earth into
- the Eastern and
- Western Hemispheres
13Absolute Location
30N 15W 45S 45E 30S 60W 15N 30E 30
N 60W 45N 45E 60S 60W 60N 30W
30S 15E 60S 75E
14Relative Location
- Location in relation to other places
- Figure out where Texas is in relation to other
states/countries - Question related to theme of location
- Where is this place
- located and how has
- its location affected it?
15Theme 2 Movement
- How are people linked together?
16Movement
- Movement describes how
- How people in one area contact people in other
areas
17Movement
- The world is constantly changing, and places are
affected by the movement of - People
- Goods
- Ideas
- Physical forces
- How is this place
- changing and why?

21Theme 3 Region
- What does it have in common?
22Region
- A region describes
- Areas that have something in common
- Or
- An area that has one or more features that make
it different from surrounding areas.
23- Examples of physical regions include climates
vegetation zones biomes general physical areas,
such as mountains and specific physical areas,
such as the Rocky Mountains. - Examples of cultural regions include Scandinavia,
Latin America, and the Bible Belt. - Examples of global regions include areas with
similar soil types, religions, climates,
languages. - Examples of local regions include school
districts, newspaper-circulation areas, and zip
code and zoning areas.

25Region
- Regions are fundamental organizing units of
geography. - Geographers use regions to give order to the
earths surface. - We organize space into regions every day. Every
time we refer to an area by saying - Im going downtown or down South, or Id
like to live in that neighborhood, we are using
the concept of regions.
How would you know you had left one region and
entered another? What characteristics make one
region different from another? How do you
determine the boundaries of a region?
26Theme 4 Place
- What is it like?
- Every place is unique and has its own
personality and character. - Examples
- weather
- plants and animals
- history
- people
27Place
What are the unique features of this place?
28Place
What are the unique features of this place?
29Place
- What are the unique
- features of this place?
30Place
- Each PLACE on Earth has it own
- DISTINCT CHARACTERISTICS
- Two types
- Human
- Or
- Physical
- (something that makes it different than any other
place in the world)
31????????????????????????????????
- What is the difference between Location Place?
32What is the difference between Location Place?
Location 5 S , 68 W
33What is the difference between Location Place?
Place Describe
34Human/Environment Interaction
- How do we interact with our environment?
35HEI
- What is an environment?
- Natural Surroundings
- Human/Environment Interaction explains
- How people use and change their environment
36HEI
- The environment influences how
- We live
- Example What is
- the environment
- like and how does it
- affect the people who
- live there
37HEI Global Warming
- Global Warming
- could be an example of
- how we affect the environment
38HEI Global Warming
