Homework Policy
  • Homework is assigned directly to support and
    enhance learning taking place in the classroom
    and it is vital to your students success
  • We expect it to be turned in on the due date,
    unless there is an illness or excused absence
  • Policy is as follows
  • 1 day late loss of a point
  • 2 days late visit to the opportunity room to
    complete the assignment, no points rewarded
  • 2 visits to the Opportunity Room lunch AND
    recess detention with 6th grade teacher and
    notification to parents
  • Excessive missing assignments will result in a
    parent conference.

  • Sent home last day of the school week
  • Review papers, sign and return on Monday
  • Please note the Assignment Notebook skills
    checklist! It is a great tool to go over with
    your students to build good habits ?

PowerSchool
  • EDLINE IS GONE!!!
  • Continue to check the St. Gabriel website for
    updates on launch of PowerSchool
  • We will be sending home paper copies of Student
    Progress reports in a couple of weeks. Until then
    it is the students responsibility to record
    homework ?

New Reading Program!
  • Our school will be transitioning to a new
    language arts program that will encompass the new
    common core state standards in reading, writing,
    and spelling.
  • Your child will be joining the Grizzly 800 Step
    Reading Challenge. That means, your child will
    be doing lots of reading in school and at home.
  • 15 minutes of silent reading will be built into
    your students language arts block, which directly
    aligns to the new reading program
  • Additional silent reading will be assigned for
    homework NIGHTLY.
  • On September 13th at 700 we will be holding a
    mandatory parent meeting to kick off this new
    focus on literacy. You will be receiving more
    information from the office about this workshop
    for parents that will be presented by The
    American Reading Company.

  • We will be learning comprehension strategies
  • Purpose for Reading
  • Answering literal, inferential, evaluative, and
    synthesizing questions
  • We will be gaining a deeper understanding of
    literary elements
  • Plot, Setting, Character, Theme, Etc.
  • Types of Genres

  • We will continue to engage in all steps of the
    writing process.
  • We will write for a variety of purposes to
    inform, to persuade, to explain, to describe, to
    tell a story.

    self-editors and peer-editors.
  • Most of our published work will be completed at
    school
  • Research skills and integration of technology
    will be a main focus in Language Arts classes

  • Spelling will no longer be a separate subject.
  • Spelling homework and tests will be part of the
    English grade.
  • We will not have weekly units and tests.

Sixth Grade Camp
  • Where Cuyahoga Valley Environmental Education
    Center (CVEEC) in Peninsula, Ohio
  • When March 25-28th, 2014
  • Cost 210.00 per student includes all meals,
    transportation, programming, and t-shirt
  • 4 days/3 nights
  • Students become Junior Rangers of National
    Parks System

  • Incorporates the arts, technology, science,
    math, social studies, and language arts
  • Discovery based hands-on learning
  • Complements classroom instruction
  • CVEEC has won local and national awards for
    quality

  • Parent Information Night TBA
  • There will be sign up sheets for chaperones at
    the Information Night.
  • All Chaperones must be VIRTUS trained and up to
    date on bulletins.
