Title: That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind

European Telcos investigate IPv6 deployment
mechanisms.

3Rationale for the Armstrong project
- Operational experience needs to be gained by the
Internet community with the deployment of the
IPv6 protocol suite - Appropriate transition mechanisms and strategies
for various scenarios are needed - This project can be seen as an IPv6 deployment
trial with a European provider testbed.
4Transition strategies IPv4 to IPv6
- Which are the possible transition strategies for
an incremental transition from IPv4 to IPv6? - Which advantages and disadvantages do these
transition mechanisms for ISPs offer (costs,
investment protection, uninterrupted operations,
...) - What should Legacy (IPv4) ISPs do (what could
Greenfield ISPs do)?
5Different tasks to be performed...
- (Native) IPv6 use over legacy IPv4 networks
- 6 over 4
- 6 to 4
- Tunnel Broker
- IPv6 hosts communicating with IPv4 hosts
- (and vice-versa)
- Socks
- NAT-PT
- BIS (Bump-In-the-Stack)
- Legacy IPv4 applications working over IPv6
networks - DSTM
6 Do nothing / Let users use external Tunnel Broker
7Offer Tunnel Broker and Tunnel Server
8Offer Dual Stack Network(early stage)
9Offer Dual Stack network(intermediate stage)
10Offer Dual Stack Network(late/final stage)
11Alternative path Offer edge only IPv6 networks
(first)
12Alternative path Offer edge only IPv6 network
(intermediate)
13Alternative path Offer edge only IPv6 network
(late/final)
